Flight Training

Forest Air Helicopters training school offers Private and Commercial flight training as well as aircraft differences training and other ratings. Our instructors are not only dedicated to excellence in flight training, but are also working charter and utility pilots, so you get the benefits of training that is backed by real world pilot knowledge and experience. Our busy operation allows students to be immersed in the day to day operations of a working helicopter company. This unique blend of training school and real operating environments leads to a more immersive aviation experience for our students.

A private pilot’s licence allows you to fly for your own fun and enjoyment. You cannot make money off your flying when you have a private licence. But you can still carry passengers and fly your helicopter almost anywhere you like.

What do I need?

  • A PPL licence consists of a minimum of 40* hours of flying.
  • You must be at least 17 years old when you sit the flight test.
  • You will be required to pass an English language assessment.
  • You will need to pass the CASA PPL(H) exam that covers all the theory subjects.
  • You must pass a class 2 aviation medical.

*This is a minimum only, most people will require more flight time to meet the required standards.

What does it cost?
The cost is $525 + GST per flight hour.

Additional costs are involved in the exam, medical, flight test and other incidentals.

Commercial Licence

A commercial licence is required if you want to have a career as a helicopter pilot. A commercial licence will allow you to fly a helicopter as a pilot and get paid for it. There are many different aspects to helicopter operations in Australia. Power line inspections, mustering, charter, offshore transfers, and aerial crane to name a few and they all require you to have a commercial licence.

What do I need?

  • A CPL licence consists of a minimum of 105* hours of flying.
  • You must be at least 18 years old when you sit the flight test.
  • You will be required to pass an English language assessment.
  • You will need to pass the 7 CASA CPL(H) exams that cover all the theory subjects.
  • You must pass a class 1 aviation medical.

What does it cost?
The cost is $525 + GST per flight hour.

Additional costs are involved in the exam, medical, flight test and other incidentals.

Trial Introductory Flight

A trial introductory flight (TIF) is the perfect way to make sure this is really the career for you. Trial flights are shortened versions of the first flight lesson. It includes a pre-flight briefing on how the helicopter flies and a chance for you to ask any burning questions you might have.

Following a pre-flight inspection of our machine, we take to the sky for a full 30 mins flying in the training area. You get to take the controls and pilot the aircraft! If you’re not sure if flying is for you, then a TIF is a great way to experience the thrill with no commitment. They also make great gifts for anyone who has always wanted to fly a helicopter.

Theory

Learning to fly involves study and passing exams. There is just no getting around it. The private pilot’s licence theory exam is a single exam covering all the subject areas. The commercial pilots licence theory consists of seven exams, each covering a separate subject area. The subject areas are; Air Law, Aerodynamics, Human Factors, General Aeronautical Knowledge, Operations and Planning, Navigation, and Meteorology.

There are a number of options for students when it comes to the theory and we can help you choose the one that works for you. There are books and online learning courses that will allow you to self-study. There are tutoring options that run on a part time basis and some can even travel to you. There is also the option of doing a full time classroom based course with one of the many provides around Australia.
